Shirley (Sherrod) LaLande

Shirley LaLande was a devoted mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose boundless love reached far beyond her immediate family.


Born in Alabama to the late Hattie Sherrod-Louis B. Harrison and her late father, Tass Washington, Shirley moved to Rhode Island as a teenager. She was a woman of deep conviction who believed in the power of family and ensured that everyone she loved was well cared for. Later in life, her heart found a beautiful new chapter when she married her beloved late husband, Douglas LaLande, sharing a precious love and companionship that she treasured deeply.


In addition to being a loving mother to her three daughters—Monique, Keya, and Felicia—she served as a second mother to many of her nieces, nephews, cousins, and younger siblings. If you were family, Shirley had a special way of making you feel completely seen, valued, and cherished as her own.


Shirley’s life was deeply rooted in her profound faith and love of God. Her spirituality guided her daily actions, giving her the strength and grace to care so deeply for others.


She was a hardworking woman of great determination who knew how to make things happen. Whether dedicating her efforts to her factory work or utilizing her talents as an exceptional saleswoman, she possessed a natural gift for connecting with people and getting the job done. She worked tirelessly to provide for and protect the people she loved.


Dynamic and memorable, Shirley’s personality always left an impression. She had a passion for singing, and while she may not have always hit the perfect note, that never stopped her from sharing her voice. She sang out of pure joy, a beautiful quality her family will always hold dear. Shirley also loved to play doctor, always ready with a home remedy or a bit of advice whenever someone felt under the weather. No matter the ailment, Shirley always seemed to have a cure at the ready.


Shirley leaves behind a legacy of love through her three daughters, Monique, Keya, and Felicia; her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended loved ones whose lives she touched so deeply.
Her family will miss her deeply—the comforting sound of her voice, her unwavering strength, her humor, her singing, and the boundless care she extended to everyone around her. Her unique place in the family can never be replaced.


Though hearts are heavy, there is immense gratitude for the years, laughter, lessons, and unconditional love she shared. Shirley's life was a true gift, and her memory will live on forever through the family she nurtured.


Rest peacefully, Mom. You were loved, you are loved, and you will always be missed.
