Jeanette Anita Gibson, passionate educator and avid reader, passed away on March 30, 2023, peacefully at 76 years young. Born in Georgetown, Guyana, to Barbara and Carlton Gibson, she is survived by her children, Diane and Dexter; her sisters, Cynthia and Barbara; her grandchildren, Deven, Diandra, Daniel, David, and Leni; her nephews, Nigel, Marcus, and Christian; her sister-in-law, Coleen and her daughter-in-law, Liselle.
Jeanette Gibson was a deeply spiritual, world traveler, poet, writer, publisher, mentor, philanthropist, volunteer and a wonderful mother. She touched the lives of hundreds of students in three countries on three continents. She made it her life's mission to inspire her students, expose those she met to her rich cultural experiences and give generously of her money, time and knowledge. After she retired, she spent most of time reading, cooking, gardening, sewing, painting, making pottery, playing card games and Scrabble and sending or reading jokes to friends and family. Jeanette encouraged children's passions. She never met a child she couldn't teach, and even the most disengaged children loved her.
Jeanette received her Ph.D from Georgia State University and was a vestry member at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Decatur, Georgia. She taught in Sokota, Jos, Kaduna, and River State in Nigeria for 10 years, and in high schools and college in Georgia for over 25 years.
Rest in power knowing that you have done your calling to inspire the world.
Memorial service will be held Saturday April 15, 2023 @ 1:00 p.m at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church at 2833 Flat Shoals Road, Decatur, GA 30034
