Astlyn Chase Thorpe was born on August 19, 1943 in Junction, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica to Rudolph Thorpe and Enid Banton. In 1971, he met the love of his life, Jasseth, and they married in 1972. The marriage produced two children, Kareen (38) and Aaron (27). Astlyn and Jasseth moved to New York in 1984. For many years, Astlyn worked with the petroleum company ExxonMobil. Upon his retirement in 2011, the family moved home to Lithonia, Georgia. The warm weather and abundant sunshine was an allure and Astlyn loved it. In fact, friends and neighbors maintain very fond memories of waving to him as they drove past him sitting on the front porch in the summer.
He is survived by his wife, children, and siblings: Elaine, Dorette, Pam, Paulette, Dothlyn, Beva, Gerda, Josephine, Vine, Lindy, and Burnett. Astlyn loved and valued his family. That was his first love. He desired that they get the best care and education America availed and, he worked very hard to ensure they did not miss out on anything. He rose at 2:15 every morning during his working years with that objective in mind.
His second love was music...specifically, Reggae. Astlyn was well-known for recording cassette tapes of “oldies but goodies” for everyone and anyone who asked. To his dying day he loved the song “Night Nurse” by Gregory Isaacs. We thank the Lord God Almighty for the blessing of the gift of Astlyn. He gave us everything.
A great tree has fallen. May his soul rest in peace.
